Q about preaching
I sometimes get a message that preaching will not increase dominion in that territory above its current level. The message only comes up when I first tell a priest to start preaching.
What is this maximum preaching level? Is it half the maximum dominion? How do you check maximum dominion anyway?
But then what if I leave a priest preaching from when the dominion is low will he be able to raise it above this maximum??
Because he will remain preaching until you tell him to stop. This means I have to check to make sure that he is not wasting his time.

Re: Q about preaching
A priest can raise Dominion only to the value of his priest level, i.e. a level 2 priest preaching in a Dominion-2 province is useless, while a level 3 priest is not.
The generic theme "Ceremonial Faith" doubles the effective priest levels for the purpose of preaching.

A priest at a temple, however, preaches as one level higher than his actual level.

Ceremonial Faith adds to to the priests effective level, it does not double it.

Note, though, that a temple in the same province as the priest adds one to his effective level, so a L2 priest in a province with a temple can preach up to level 3 domain.
Maximum dominion is the gods base dominion (chosen at god selection time) plus the number of temples built to the god divided by 5. So gods with a weak dominion can build more temples to raise their dominion. I'm not sure if the current max is shown anywhere - maybe try clicking on the temple site info.
As far as priests continuing to preach after they've maxed out their own capability - I think it could still be useful sometimes, because it could help prevent the dominion from neighboring provinces from encroaching and lowering the dominion in your province.

But it tops out at 10, correct? So if I have a pretender with a dominion of 8, and build 15 temples, I can still only have 10 dominion in a province, not the 11 that would be my theoretical max...
