Which planet/atmosphere type do YOU pick ?
Hi everyone,
just wondering, what kind of planet and atmosphere do you usually type when playing against AI or on pbw ? I usually stick with gas giants, either methan or carbon dioxide, but lately i have discovered that using a rock - none combo cna be pretty good, too.
So tell me, what do you usually pick ?

How do you type an atmosphere?
Seriously, after seeing the distribution in the Dertran game, I've started going with ice and CO2, except when house rules specify otherwise. I may switch to methane, though, as that choice seems to be even less common.

Re: Which planet/atmosphere type do YOU pick ?
In stock, there is a bug that gives a slight edge to rock-methane (by taking a little away from ice-methane). ie, the odds of finding a rock-methane planet are slightly better than finding any of the other rock atmospheres (besides rock-none). Thus it gives rock-methane an advantage in the early game, but evens out in the long run (when the odds of finding an ice-methane planet are slightly reduced).
Now, the impact of this is small, but, since I am a play-it-by-the-numbers min-maxer power-gaming munchkin, I almost always take rock methane.
I also consider rock-none if I think the game will be "over" before everyone gets all the colony tech.

I usually (but not always) go with the good ol' Rock - Oxygen. I like to think I can breathe on my breathable worlds

Rock/oxygen.
The planets just look Earth-like at first glance, so my first image of a system gives me the impression of what it holds for me.
I don't worry about planet distribution for PBW. People trade population and colonization types all the time, so any benefit tends to become diluted eventually.

Re: Which planet/atmosphere type do YOU pick ?
In KOTH (or similar games), I go for Rock/Oxygen to try having the same atmosphere as the other player. The point is to avoid giving away my breathers, which is something I love to do.
Otherwise, if I expect to do some population trading, I go with Rock and Hydrogen or Carbon Dioxyde. I pick these uncommon atmospheres just to have an edge when trading population, since there will be fewer such Empires, and I could even be the only Empire with one of these atmospheres. It rarely works, and does not really matter, but since you can trade population around, it amounts to the same in the end.

Re: Which planet/atmosphere type do YOU pick ?
The larger the planet the better.
Gas Giant is the way to go. With advance storage, you get 30 space on a huge gas giant planet. I haven't played PBW much and have only completed a couple games so far. But it seems that with the bonus percentage facilities, concentrating your facilities is a good idea.
Also less planets means easier defense.
Gas Giant is possibly a bad idea on small maps. With one game with a small map, I haven't been able to find many suitable planets.
In my KOTH game, I played rock/none. Besides morally justifying population dumping, every small moon becomes a tiny breathable planet.
<edit> I guess it depends on playing style. I like to fill one planet with one type of facility. Less hassle </edit>

Re: Which planet/atmosphere type do YOU pick ?
I almost always go with Ice/Methane when playing against the AI; because there are fewer planets at game start. Makes it a little more of a challenge.
The AI is OK, but I try to give it more advantages (or myself more disadvantages) just to make the games Last a little longer. (Don't use all your racial points, max AI bonuses and difficulty, etc.)
EDIT: Hey, I just noticed tomorrow is my 4 year "birthday" for this forum.
