What do you think of...
...this: http://www.strategyfirst.com/forum/c...002;p=2#000034
I say some kind of portability from SEV or SEVI to Starfury would be the ultimate.
I don't know if anyone in Strat is reading this, but that would be an AWESOME gaming software model:
Design three different kinds of games (turn based, first person rpg/shooter, real time - be creative!) and enable portability between them.
This would essentially exploit a concept called a gaming "universe" (I guess you could call it that).
It's almost like Maxis's Sim City and its Rush Hour and Sims programs, I think future Space Empires releases could benefit from this model - and exploit it.
Imagine:
Space Empires VI Premiere Edition:
-Space Empires VI
-Star Fury 3
-Emperor's Command
Emperor's Command could be the perspective of you, a grunt in your Empire's navy.
It would load a history file from any game you select that you've already played in SEVI. The history file would port over to EC, and the game would start in the year 2400 with you as the Emperor's assistant doing things in an rpg-like environment. Missions are created for you to participate in, and you could even conceivably change the outcome of the game you had played/are playing in SEIV while playing your role in Emperor's Command.
Then you would port over you EC game to SEIV, and pick up where it leaves off, and you can play your next turn and continue to "dictate" the future history you would want to play in later in EC.
You could even jump into StarFury seemlessly (if you had it) to take command of a ship in any fleet battle in SEIV, or revert to Emperor's Command to do the same thing from a crewman's perspective - say take part in a bording party.
I mean, think of the possibilities!

S1st has nothing to do with the making of MM's games at this point in time.

Re: What do you think of...
Would be good. Never going to happen. Your trying to get gamers to cross genres, which is always a long shot. You're massively complicating the coding of all three games on the hope of getting some cross promotion.
How many RPG fans would want to play SEIV? With both being niche products to start with increasing your development costs on a hope is officialy a bad thing.

Malfador... The publisher has changed, not the developer.

Re: What do you think of...
well, I knew that.
I was simply addressing strat because they are the publisher of many kinds of games, and I figured someone would pick up on the idea.
Seriously though, I don't see what the all hub-bub would be about making Space Empires games portable to StarFury.
I can think of many people who would be interested in starting an empire, setting its course, and then playing in the universe they created. Look no further than how role playing has become a part of many PBW Space Empires games.
Making such a concept portable into a StarFury-like game would, shall we say, be very interesting.
Once you port over your empire's history file from Space Empires, you start a computer-generated role-playing universe based on that history file. Then you can change history by your actions - say, playing a character in another race, etc. Then you take that history and load it up in Space Empires, and you can continue to write the future in a different way.
In a multiplayer environment, the role play could still be turn based. Players play the standard Space Empires game, but they could slow it down by playing the role playing version with each other. PBC would take on a new realm of operation.
Players that wanted to play and not role play could opt to process their game turn in Space Empires, and then other users would role play in StarFury (or some other game) and then upload that same game file.
The concept is simple. Implementation will require the development of either a new Space Empires or new StarFury, or a game dedicated to exploring the role play aspect of saved game files, but I think the concept has merit, and Aaron, if you're reading, feel free to explore it.
I'd love to be able to have options to "Command A Ship", "Strategic", "Tactical", or "Role Play" the combat rounds.
Command a Ship would be flying a single vessel like in StarFury - and would actually be linked to the StarFury game.
Strategic and Tactical would remain the same.
Role Play would be taking a first-person point of view of anyone specific in the fleet, during the battle. Joining up with boarding parties, manning individual guns, repairing downed equipment, and healing crew members. Turn-based of course.

Re: What do you think of...
It's been tried before with some level of success.
Omnitrend created Breach and then Rules of Engagement. You could fight ship to ship in RoE and when boarding combat happened, you could export the scenario to Breach and resolve the man-to-man level combat there. You could then send the battle results back to RoE. RoE was set in the Universe setting, but a third game linking Universe and Roe was never created.
