Mayday Mayday SOS need urgent help!!!11!!two
Woe oh woe, SEIV will no longer play! It has been like this for some time, but just now I remembered it might have something to do with the SEIV folder being read-only, so I went to the Administrator account (which I mainly use for installing and modding, and sometimes for playing games that won't work without Administrator(!) privileges - I'm looking at you, Black&White, Age of Mythology, Dungeon Siege!!) and lo and behold, there was a green square in the Read-Only box in the SEIV folder properties!!!z0mg! Now while I am aware of the little box's existence next to the tick mark, I haven't a clue as to what it is used for, but that aside I clicked the checkbox and it turned white as it should. I then went on to play, and SEIV pulled the same trick on me as it has done for some time; Invalid File Error at the end of a turn, after which it wouldn't respond to anything save for a Ctrl+Alt+Delete forced process termination. I tried again, same results. I went to the folder, and what did I find? The darned box again! I cleared it and clicked OK, then to be sure I clicked Properties again. It was bloody there! Apart from my acute unreasonable hatred of anything with four like-sided sides, I have absolutely no idea of what to do with regard to the game. Can anyone please help?
excuse the rant-mode

Uninstall, then re-install. Something, somewhere, is messed up, and probably won't fix itself. So just replace it.

Delete it and reinstal. That should fix it. Delete it all the way before reinstalling. And/Or copy the downloaded files somewhere else to save time later. (then patch it, ect)
If the box is not staying unchecked it sounds as if you have a permissions issue. Not logged in as Admin or some other windows thing happening.

I specifically logged in as Administrator, but I just wanted to know if there were any alternatives to what you suggest - uninstalling then reinstalling takes time, and I wondered if there might be a quicker way to solve it. Oh well, I guess I'll have to reinstall it then

What version of Windows are you running? IIRC, in pretty much every version but XP Home (stupid stripped-down piece of %$!^), you can assign privileges to specific folders. Make sure you have full control privileges to SE4 and apply the changes recursively.

Or, install programs that you want to use as limited user, to some place other than "Program Files"

You could select the whole games folder, right-click and go set it all "recursively" to read/write, and use the (whatever evil Windohs version) "Security" tab to give read, write, and execute priviledges to Everyone.
That might work. Or not, given that it is Windohs.

Re: Mayday Mayday SOS need urgent help!!!11!!two
I have always used the Admin account on this PC to play SEIV, as modding only works with Admin privileges, and going to my usual account just to test something gets tedious. Under the Admin account, I (am supposed to) have full Admin privileges.
I use XP Home.
And can anyone tell me what that ruddy box is for?

Sounds to me like permissions are being inherited. Go to the Security:Advanced properties of the parent folder and deselect the "Inherit blah blah blah..." from the items, apply it, go back to the SEIV folder and try again.
