Default WWI and Colonial Warfare.

An age old question I know but are there any WWI or colonial mods for SPWWII out there? I am working on one of sorts but I have gotten stuck. If someone else has any ideas, sources for oobs, oobs or maybe even a mod then please drop me a line here.

wow, 44 and counting and still no ideas, solutions or suggestions. Come on everyone don't be afraid all you need to do is offer some ideas, anything.

I do realise that the period 1930-46 is effectively 22 years out but that really doesn't matter too much to me at the moment as I am merely trying to get the basic OOBs sorted out. For that I need some ideas.

Hi RM
There was talk ages ago of a WW1 mod for the DOS version...but it petered out to nothing. I think Don and Andy even left the dates open for ages to help out with that, but eventually gave up waiting.
That's all I know bud.
I guess plenty of the early war units would be almost the same as WW1 era stuff. Also, you now have barbed wire to use which shouls make it more realistic to do the trench stuff.

Cheers

WWI is doable and I beleive is not entirely dead.

The idea of pushing back the clock to mid to late 19th century - American civil war, Franco Prussian, Boer war etc. has been discussed. The consensus was that the current engine is not designed to properly handling battles of that time period - specifically command and control and unit fragility. So its not a lack of interest or will, its all been discussed before.

Please go ahead and post what you have done so far - you may have a new perspective.

Hmm if I remember right, someone continued to improve "alpha-version SP:American Civil War" mod files into SPWAW(I saw some screenies in SPWAW's Matrix forum loong time ago). But no any info whatever happened after that... And someone did WW1-oobs (into African theater only) into dos-SPWW2. Not sure if anyone ever tried to convert them into Windows versions...

No one has done any work on the WW1 project for some time. I did the WW1 African theatre orbats for SPWW2v.4 (I think it was, several years ago.) They work as late as version 6 but not later.

Problems with doing late colonial wars are: as PatG said, the communications difficulties of late 19th century warfare can't be modelled, also, the game does not allow effective volley fire, (the zed key is not it) and the devastating effect of things like Maxim guns on massed formations is not modelled. These difficulties seem to be in the game engine; it was NEVER designed to to do 19th century warfare. You can't do line and supported line formations. The effect of black powder covering your line of sight (as with say, the Martini-Henry rifle) isn't done. The game assumes everyone is using smokeless powder.
WW1 battles CAN be done. 1920's and '30s colonial wars can be done easily, and you can do an APPROXIMATION of Boer War, Herero War, Russo-Japanese War, and Afghan Wars battles, but only approximations.

But show us what you can do. I am always interested in what other hackers and modders can do.
