My love for the Gas Giants!
The Gas Giants are so fun to make bases out of. Most of them are large so that many facilities can be built. It is true that there aren't too many of them around, but I would rather have a suitable Huge Planet than having a dozen of tiny planets. Oh and how soon should I research the other two colonization modules (for rocky and icy)... I would like to research the easy topics first... once they are out of the way, I will put my effort into colonization of other types of planet.
By the way, I am playing the demo Version of the game... I think i am going to buy it but I will test it a bit longer. It is really fun and I especially love the interface... it is nice to have everything all together, unlike Reach for the Stars...
The only gripe is the start up background... it looks uninspiring and the 3D work is too...raw. A beautify scene of nebula and a distant planet should do the trick (blue planet with white clouds?)

Re: My love for the Gas Giants!
Easy way to get more colony tech. Simply research 'Ship Capture' (under Military Science) and use boarding parties to get enemy colony ships. Then take them back to the nearest space yard and analyze them for the components. But don't forget to first offload the population, it can be used best on worlds that they breathe, but you don't!
And yes, BUY THE GAME!! (but only if you want to lose the rest of your spare time, , it all goes here !!!)

Re: My love for the Gas Giants!
I've only researched another colony tech in one game so far. There are too many other techs that I put a higher priority on.

Re: My love for the Gas Giants!
I think using any other colonizing tech besides the one you start with gives you a tremendous advantage over the AI. Personally, I restrict myself to only colonizing home planet type and never research/use another colony tech.
I think you will find it a very boring if you use all the colony techs. You will overwhelm the AI economically.

Re: My love for the Gas Giants!
There's very little point researching other colonisation techs when they're _so_ easy to trade / steal / capture / conquer from your opponents. It does make a huge difference to your economy.
How about splitting the cost of each colonisation tech up into (say) 10 levels, with only the highest level giving you accss to the colony componenet? Then you'd have to trade/ capture and analyse 10 colony ships to get the component without research.
Might cause some game start problems though...

You should be able to set the starting tech level higher; I think the game takes care of only allowing one colonization tech per race. I may have to test this sometime...
