Default How about a way to lose technology

How about a way to have an empire lose technology. Like for instance when you have a certain amount of research facilities distroyed there is a chance you lose a random technology type. You would then be forced to either scrap research one of your own ships or research again on a topic.

Example: In Babylon5 Earth Alliance was pretty high tech with Vorlon and Shadow tech. Then a civil war broke out that put Earth back to the Dark Ages. This way very brutal wars can set very large empires back.

Atom,

That won't work as you can and will reduce the number of research centers as you approach the end of things to learn. And to lose tech the WHOLE empire has to colapse which I can't see being allowed to happen since a player would then have to sit around and do nothing.

Maybe as a intelligence option but again you would need to do alot of damage to total elimnate knowledge of a tech. IMHO

I don't think it can be done in the game. It would be a nice thing to have but now once you research something you have it forever.

Here's an older thread about losing research. I know I read one before that discussed having "Research Maintenance", but I can't seem to find it in the search.

Basically, for every tech you have, you must spend 5% of it's original cost to maintain it, and the remaining points can go to new techs.

Would be interesting, since you would have to always have professors teaching the younger ones in between experiments in "high energy discharge", and races would have to decide which techs are worth the most.
Maintenance could be reduced by having a large population, too... say one RP per 10M people is assigned to reducing maintenance.

Follow the link at the top... there's a good example in there of how you could lose a tech level.
