Default Difficult Reasearch

I have never played a nation on difficult research.

I just checked the Manual, Wiki, and all other guides I can find but no help.

How exactly does difficult reaserch differ from standard reaserch

Is it just that it takes more points to get a level in a school...is it that easy?

And if so how many extra points does it take...

I am thinking about playing a nation EA on difficult research but without understanding if just taking Magic 1 will make up the difference it is hard to choose a nation.

Any help would be appreciated.

Each path level costs the same as 1 greater, or 2 greater on Very Hard.

I'm sure it said somewhere in the manual, but basically where it's 40 on Normal, it's 60 on Hard, and 100 on Very Hard. You can plot the rest of them from there.

the harder the research the more:

1.. The longer the initial phase of the game where military units are important lasts.

2. The more you need to think about the value of the magic scale.

3. The bigger the advantage of preresearched spells, like carrion woods.

4. The more likely globals will stay up longer, as few people will have researched your spell to overwrite, or dispell to dispell.

Note, Carrion Woods is NOT a level 0 spell unless you play with CB.

The cumulative effect is pretty drastic for the high end research. The aggregate totals and the subtotals for each level and each difficulty are in the FAQ.

Also consider research when choosing your nation and Pretender. For instance, if your nation might normally rely on researching paralyze to stop stuff like an Elephant/Mammoth rush, bear in mind you're going to be very vulnerable with the same tactics on hard research.
