Default Robe of Invulnerability

There is an E5 item called Robe of Invulnerability.

Now, Superman was Invulnerable (Lol,except for Kryptonite of course).

Why is this a 'Very Powerful' object and not a unique one?

It doesn't have any drawbacks listed and if you are invulnerable then you can't be physically damaged. I would suppose that it only pertains to Physical damage but I am not that sure.

So....you give your Rainbow Pretender the Robe, a couple of MR items, and Clark Kent becomes Superman.

I HAVE to be missing something!!!

Any help on this quedtion would be appreciated.

It's not absolute invulnerability. The robe just casts the spell invulnerability on the wearer. So you do get very high protection, but you can still be damaged by attacks, and it makes you vulnerable to poison damage. It is also a very expensive item, so you will only want to forge them rarely. But they are quite nice, since they give 0 encumbrance.

Theoretically it's nice but completely overprized.

Yep, totally overpriced for what it gives you, never forged one yet, thats how good it is! Much better things to use my earth gems on.

Please try forging items before analysing their effect on the game.

As others have indicated, what the RoI does is the equivalent of casting invulnerability on the wearer.

That makes it a very good item, though incredibly highly priced for its effect.

It does not get used all that much because not only are earth gems usually in high demand and not only can many SC pretenders self-cast Invulnerability in battle, it also shares one of the more hotly contested item slots.

So you generally will not use it for your SCs due to other options and not for thugs due to the cost being too great despite it being an excellent companion to the low-protection helms.

I will have to agree with the others that it is overpriced for it's effects in almost all situations.

...but that is in competitive multiplayer. In singleplayer, where different considerations apply with respect to SC/thug survivability (e.g. I can leave myself vulnerable in some ways depending on what I am facing while knowing that the current AI nation I am fighting is extremely unlikely to be able to take advantage of it and will only do so by pure and unlikely circumstance), I have used it several times and had great fun doing so.

While admittedly playing singleplayer has the feeling of beating up a crippled man with the concussed mind of a duckling, it is still a central part of the game as a whole, and I don't mind there being some units, items, or spells that get used more in SP than MP and vice versa.

It can be useful on that one vulnerable mage your whole army depends.

If you want to dump some +protec on a character for 0 encumbrance, I'd generally turn Stone Boots or a barkskin amulet first as they're much cheaper.

If you've got a very critical low-HP mage - say an A4 Pythium archtheurg you're relying on to cast Fog Warriors - a RoI could be invaluable if you think your opponent is going to hammer the battlefield with Earthquake or Rain of Stones, as the other two likely won't confer enough protec to save it. It might also save the mage in several assassination or remote bombardment situations.

If you are using big fatiguing spells you can take a normal armor, too, since spellcasting encumberance doesn't matter that much then.

Amulet of Luck would be key on any critically valuable mage, too.
