explain THIS to me

ok so im playing a Sp game right now (1.49) and i am a crystallurgy race facing temporary (TDB). My new LC has two crystalline armors II and shield IV. Now the ship gets hit with a temporary shifter (pure damage) and then by the TDB. There is a damage to the shields and there is a NEGATIVE structural damage -- -17.
What that holy crystals is that?

1) Undamaged ship.
2) Temporal Shifter does ALL-skipping damage.
3) Many internals destroyed, an engine is hit Last, and survives 17 damage.
4) The 17 points of damage is shown as subtracting from hull hitpoints, and is stored in the "excess damage variable"
5) The TDB hits your shields, and does its normal 60, plus 17 points from the excess damage.
6) Excess damage is now at zero, so the hull indicates having 17 fewer points of damage than before.

However, that 17points of excess damage did 68 damage to your shields, since it was applied with a Quad damage to shields weapon!
