Mods with SE IV not Gold

I'm yet another of the disgruntled MOO 3 buyers who just started SEIV. Excellent game, especially compared to MOO 3. Odd thing is I've had SEIV in a drawer for months and only just started playing it.

Anyway, I have Version 1.49. Can I still use the same mods used with Gold? There are some fantastic looking mods out! I hate to spend $40 more to go gold though when I just started playing with the old Version which I paid $40 for.

What mods would you recommend for a strong AI game?

Pirates & Nomads is good for SE4 classic.

Look for Versions 2.x
The ones tagged with "PBW" are, of course for PBW, and AIs will not operate with them.

Try V2.4D

If you play as a "Normal" race, it will be slightly easier than normal (Although it will take some time to get used to the mod)

If you play as a "Nomad" is will be very hard.
If you play as a "Pirate" it will be even harder.

When playing as a Pirate or Nomad, feel free to make use of every trick in the book against the AIs.
Everything is fair game except cheats

I reccommend laying mines in shipping lanes, and then picking apart the leftovers for tech and scrappable resources.
Be sure to have a spaceyard ship nearby so you don't waste too much money maintaining the ships you capture while you drag them home.

There is a Version of TDM for non-Gold, but it is out-dated, and not updated anymore. The B5 Mod is developed with non-Gold. If you look hard enough, you can probably find the old Versions of mods that are compatible with non-Gold.
