Anti Helicopter mines
I think that it would be good to add some Anti Helicopter Mines to some country oobs.
AHMs use explosively formed projectiles to engage enemy helos passing by. Targeting is done by ir sensor, long range target detection is done through detecting engine sounds.
It can be simulated by creating SAM launcher armed with very short range (2-3 hex) high acuracy SAM. It should be size 0 and crew sholud be one man (with zero survivability) since game cant have unmanned units. It should be light enough to be carried in light vehicles.

Re: Anti Helicopter mines
Has this ever been used before? I've heard of terrorist taking an SA-7 and setting a timer on it to intercept civillian flights, but who's used an anti-helo mine before? Is it some kind of prototype? Or do you just want it in the game because its cool?

Re: Anti Helicopter mines
Hi.
This was mentioned when I was in the Norwegian Air Force. My impression was that this was oversized Claymore-mines, that pointed upwards. From my understanding, they had to be fiered manually.

Re: Anti Helicopter mines
Nope, its all real . But, yes, i want them becsause they are cool . (and effective)
Probably most famous AHM is Russian TEMP-20:
Source: Russian AHMs
Other mines of this kind are european ADW, and US AHM-200-1
And, of course polish IMZR-11
Quote:
At the 13th International Defence Industry Exhibition in Kielce Wojskowe Zaklady Uzbrojenia No. 2 presented a “Smart Remote Mine to Fight Helicopters and Low-flying Targets” IMZR-11, which on the very first day proved to be the sensation of the Fair. The mine effectively fights helicopters that come within a range of up to 150 m at a speed up to 300 km/h. It is equipped only with passive sensors; thus, it is undetectable from the helicopter. Two explosively formed projectiles (EFP) travelling at a velocity of over 2500 m/s are capable of piercing the helicopter armour equal to piercing steel armour of 60mm.

Re: Anti Helicopter mines
Anti Helicopter Mines ! God! What comes next... Mineclearing Helos ??!! And what are the counter tactics?
Cheap UAVs playing loud heavy metal music?
I would not mind if they were somehow included in the game but I don't think it is a priority though. Gamewise, I can live without them.
Seriously now, are any of these systems operational?

Re: Anti Helicopter mines
Wrong, Hoplitis. Cheap UAVs playing "Y.M.C.A" over and over again over the enemy's lines...

Re: Anti Helicopter mines
From debka.com headlines
DEBKAfile’s military sources: Did a novel type of “flying roadside bomb” down three US helicopters in Iraq?
January 21, 2006, 2:54 PM (GMT+02:00)
US forces in Iraq are encountering a new Sunni insurgent anti-air weapon which is proving deadly for low-flying helicopters. It works on the same principle as the roadside bomb (IED or improvised explosive device). This primitive weapon is thought to account for the unexplained downing in 10 days of three American combat helicopters.

Re: Anti Helicopter mines
It's just an Iranian SA-14 tied to a tree and fitted with a timer. Or mabye it's just remote-controlled Terrorists have used, or tried to use, the exact same thing to shoot down civillian airliners. It's unlikely that they'd bother with expensive high-tech equipment like anti-helo mines.
What is this mine's effect on tanks and infantry? Can it be burried underground or hidden somehow, and do tanks and infantry set it off?
