If we were to print the entire manual, it would have been 400+ pages at that size AFAIR, and it would have added some $30+ to the cost at the very least, and also added signifigantly to postage costs due to the weight, and the fact that a box would be required (more cost) to contain it etc.
The printed booklet supplied with the CD editions is therefore a "Quick Start Guide" with relevant extracts from the full manual to get new players up and running. How to install, and the tutorial walk-through to get them up to speed on basic gameplay. (It also fits the CD case format, so does not add too much to production & shipping costs.)
And in any case the HTML Game Guide has hyperlinks, and can be searched which a chunk of dead tree cannot
. Plus the images are in colour and full-size.
(I have never seen the finished product - so have no idea if the imagery is in B/W or not. I do know the images required reduction in size to fit the CD case format.)
