1.78 patch works with saved games?

I didn't see it stated anywhere, so I'm asking. I figure it does. I'm over halfway through my first game using 1.60. Man, it's a long game (but I'm taking it slow 'cause I'm learning)!

Yes, it does. You may have to go in as the game master and run a turn manually though- sometimes the anti-cheat protection thinks you're up to something when you patch.
