Default Mining Stations

Ok, I can't figure out how to build a mining station and get it to the planet/asteroid field I want. I don't seem to have a ship(yet, have researched to cruiser & light Carrier) big enough to hold a shipyard so that I can build it on-site, and it won't fit in cargo holds....is this the way its supposed to be...I have to wait until mid-game to build a space station/platform outside of an occupied planet?

cruisers should hold a space yard. also, you can use sats.
