Why a domed city when I have the correct planet / atmosphere?
I made a race with gas / hydrogen attributes. I found a gas planet with a hydrogen atmosphere. It made a domed colony with 5 facilities max. What's up?

You sure its hydrogen? Ive never had this happen before.

The two will hover, spinning inches above the ground. With a giant buttered cat array, a high-speed monorail could easily link New York with Chicago.

Did you use colonists from a different race? I've done that and it sure is annoying.

Re: Why a domed city when I have the correct planet / atmosphere?
I had the exact same thing happen to me only it was with a Rock colony. When I colonized I picked a military installation. The planet had an O2 atmosphere and it was small. For some reason the colony came domed with a max facility of 5.
I abandoned the planet, recolonized and picked a mining colony type. This time the colony wasn't domed and the max facility was 10.
Maybe this is a bug? I didn't conquer any other planets yet so I don't think I would would have colonized with any other races besides human.

I strongly suspect you built the colony ship on a planet with another race. Take a transport and put a few million of the proper race on it and send it to the planet. Transfer the new colonists to the planet in question and remove the old ones. See if that makes a difference.

Nope, that was in the begining of the game with the original race. The planet showed up with a green star too. But when I colonized it it got a dome.

Perhaps a military compound creates a dome, to add to planet defense? Or it was a bug.

This happens when you don't use the "colonize" button with the colonizer stting over a world with some of your peoples on .. it than builds an empty dome which reverts back to "normal colony" when you drop some colonists via transport.
At least that's what I observed with the v0.56 demo .. dunno how it is now, but maybe you want to check
