Cargo....
Okay, probably a really dumb question about cargo, but here goes....
What is it good for? I mean, I understand the "militant" aspects of it (fighters, mines, etc), but what about 'cargo' in the truest definition? From what I see in the manual and my tutorial efforts, resources are automatically sent to your empire pool without transport, including remotely mined resources. Is there another use for 'cargo' that I am not aware of?
Thank you
Jonathan

Re: Cargo....
Shipping around population to new colonies to boost their growth and production. I try to skim off the top of all my big planets so the population always grows. ie never have pop maxed out. I guess it's compulsory behaviour aquired playing Stars!

Re: Cargo....
Okay, then next question about cargo....
What is the point of cargo space on planets? Increasing your planet's population?
Thanks

Re: Cargo....
Planetary 'Cargo' is strictly for military purposes IMO. Adding Cargo storage allows the planet to hold more Troops/Weapon Platforms/Fighters etc. I build them on my 'staging areas' where I will be producing massive amounts of troops and fighters to spare me the hassle of always having to transport them offplanet every turn.

Re: Cargo....
Cargo space on planets is where units (troops, mines, satellites, weapon platforms, etc.) are stored on the surface. It's supposed to be possible to use up all the cargo space so that you can't build or place any more (though I haven't seen it myself, since I don't let stuff accumulate too much).

I've seen that happen quite often. I like to stick a WP or two on even the little tiny planets and you can only place one of the small platforms on the smallest domed planets.
That'd be where the cargo facility might be useful, except that the planets with enough facility space to spare for such things are the same ones with more cargo space than would be sensible to fill up with units!

Re: Cargo....
Ever tried attacking a Huge non-domed planet with a couple of cargo facilities III all stacked to the brim with weapon platforms and fighters? Add a ****load of satellites in orbit and some battlestations and ships and you're really in for it. Talk about being up **** creek without a paddle.

Re: Cargo....
Now you're talking Jubala! Have you ever seen the AI do this?

Re: Cargo....
No, I haven't seen the AI do this effectively. I have seen AI planets with lots and lots of weapon platforms and some fighters but they all had inferior weapons so I could stay out of range and bLast it anyway. I have also occasionally seen an AI planet with a base or two but they usually have old weapons as well. The AI really should retrofit stuff. I also think weapon platforms should have range advantages like bases now have but that's easily changed so...
This particular situation happened against a friend of mine. The deathtolls to take that place out was severe.
