Unrest

I'll often (when playing against the AI) get small levels of unrest in many of my provinces....1, 3, that sort of thing.

I know a brigand lair is 5, but what's causing this? Does being in a negative dominion cause unrest in your province? Or is the AI doing it?

Yes, hostile dominion increases unrest automatically. Battles do too.
