Is it possible just to "hold position"?
I have only figured out how to get some of my squads to "hold and attack" -- but I would sort of just like them to stay where they are and attack if attacked -- sort of like "guard commander" but rather "guard spot", since I dont want them running to the commander whom I have placed way in the back. Do I put "Hold or cast a spell" instead or is this something possible only after a patch?
thanks

Hold and Attack is the closest thing to what you want. You might experiment with bringing along extra commanders to "guard" in an attempt to acheive the effect you want though...

Re: Is it possible just to "hold position"?
Seemingly you have to do it with extraneous commanders. You can get a fodder commander set him to holdx5 then stay behind troops (though they may move a little from that) have your group(s) set to gaurd commander, it should keep them more or less put.
An alternative is to deck out your commander with a cheap missile weapon and have him fire (at whomever depending on range of bow and position of commander) with the masses set to gaurd him.
Its not exact, but it should work.

I'm sorry, but it propably won't be. Imagine 30 turns of a fight in which both sides thought to have bowmen, but the leaders were assasinated... And only the Hold -infantry attacked. Long, boring "fight", and then one side routs.

Well, sure, but firstly this might even be fairly realistic and secondly (and more importantly) you wouldnt have to watch the boring battle, would you?

Re: Is it possible just to "hold position"?
A good strategy early on is to create 6-8 non-magical commanders with 5-10 troops each. Then place them at the back of the battlefield with cast orders and give each of them a small skull totem (requires lvl 1 death magic to forge).
Then give them cast orders and tell their troops to guard commander. They will create a never ending stream of undead charging forward and rarely will their troops become engaged. You need at least 6-8 commanders to create enough undead to take on moderate sized enemy armies. Any less and the few undead will get overwhelmed each turn allowing the enemy to advance towards your commander line.
This works to some extent with mages and priests as well, but they sometimes start casting regular spells and the undead troops dry up. Non-magical commanders will use the totem each turn to create a new troop as long as you give them cast orders.
