Because they consume resources, both supplies in the province they're in and money from the payroll. I agree that a soldier with a single affliction is generally worth keeping, but one with two or more can better serve his lord by staying at home.

I would love an option to retire my soldiers, even if it cost something. I mean, with Burden of Time, you get some soldiers that are blind, limp, with chest wounds, battle fright, and lord-knows-what-else. These people are less than useless. I'd love to be able just to get rid of them, even at the cost of unrest or gold.

I'm really not seeing why people don't just put these afflicted units at the very front of the battlefield, and use them to absorb some of the initial impact from fresh troops.

Not really. They can still act as meatshields for your other troops. Put them in a separate squad and their deaths won't even affect morale.
