Default assassination works with Indies and PD?

Hello, wondering if assassinating Indy commanders and the commanders that automatically come when an enemy has province defence +1 /+10/+20 does anything (or: will they simply get automatically reset every turn). My limited experience tells me it is the latter, I seem to be able to assassinate a commander every turn for 10 straight!
thanks

I've found it works for independants. Though possibly only if you attack the same turn as you assassinate.

But I've definitely won battles vs the indies by having an assassin take out their leader, then when my troops turn up the indies auto-rout cos they got no leader. Haven't paid enough attention to see exactly how it works.

in my experiences i have to assassinate 3 or 4 times before all the leaders are dead, and then I make my assassin attack the province.

If anyone hasn't realised by now, INDEPENDENT PROVINCES DOOO NOT!!!! I REPEAT DOOO NOT!!! USE DEFENCE...

You can definitly kill all indy commanders and then use your assassin to attack the province.

You know that there are no commanders left when you don't receive an assassination attempt message from your assassin (if there is noone to kill, he wont tell you about it)

I've been considering trying to seduce some independent knight commanders... I don't really want to get my succubus trampled by a mounted knight, though (not that she wouldn't likely dodge and behead the knight anyway, but still...).

I once attacked an independent province and found only zombies with no leader, who just ran away immediately I han't assassinated anyone and it was pretty early in the game, but the province was near a death & miasma dominion source, so I expect there was a necromancer who had died from that.

The assassination thing is probably one of the easiest ways to expand as R'lyeh early game: Forget about building all those troops, just pile up money, crank out temples, build forts, priests, researchers.....and Star Children.

4 or 5 Star Children and a cheap scout can wipe out any Indy province. Have the Star Children enter a province and assassinate all the commanders, then the lone scout can take the entire province unopposed. Attrition is minimal, and Star Children are cheap, yet deadly. Considering that R'lyeh normally faces a gold crunch, this is way cheaper than trying to build normal troops. As R'lyeh's troops are primarily gold-based almost to an extreme, and gold piles up in your treasury, you should have little difficulty conjuring up a flash mob when you finally meet real opposition.
