okay i was skimming thogh my sectype file today ((adding Pulsars and brown dwarfs))when i came to Comets in the alowable types now why havent they utilized this yet ?? it would be like in the beggining of Sir Arthur C. CLarkes 2061 the thrid oddysey i would liker to see comets as an object that apears and disappears at a timed intervell((like every year)) or it moves around the system

Perhaps comets appearing and disappearing should be an "omen", espcially in systems controlled by religious races. Comets could be coded to appear after great battles and the fall of empires, before catastrophic events (ie natural star collapse) and so on. Might add an interesting flavour to the game...

I would rather see comets used as events. For instance:

Game Log: Planet Abidon VII has passed thru the tail of a comet. Conditions and values have been reduced 50% for a period of 2 years. Shields and sensors are ineffective in this sector for 2 months. ...or something like that....

Maybe they're already in that events mod that I haven't tried yet....

Sorry,
but events can not be made as a temp effect nor can they effect more then one thing per event. I have asked for more code to allow for temp events and/or events that can effect more then one thing at a time. So a comet event would change the conditions of a planet forever unless that planet has the improvement facs.
I can add comet events, but since there were not pictures of comets. I have not.

As for the comet in the secttype file, You can add pictures and then add the comet but it would not move. Not sure how the game would use them( i.e. treat them like suns, storms, etc.) No one has attempted to add them as far as I know.
