Default se4 on Apple????

Just a quick question, cause if I (read:we) get a new computer it will be a Mac if my fiance has anything to say about it. Does/will Se4 be published in a Mac Version?? Can it?(ie, can it be coded and still remain totally moddable in a mac format??Don't know much about them except they come in funky colors and my fiance swears by them).

Thanks, would love a response by MM.

Get a new computer - but hold on to your PC because I don't think that Space Empires will be appearing on a Mac for a while...a long while. I don't think that Aaron has the time to port it...

I'm with Spoogy. Keep that PC, because it takes a lot of coding to transfer a game between PC and MAC.

In my personal experience macs tend to have a lot of bugs. For Example, I took a graphics class that used G4s, (They played Quake 3 like a dream) but when I tried to use Photoshop v5.5 or Illustrator v8.0 it always tended to run out of RAM, or just kick me out of the program for not reason. When I went surfing the net for graphics some places on the internet would make it crash.

I admit my PC has some problems but they don't happen nearly as often as problems with Macs.

Of course it could be just my advanced abilities in the field of OS destruction.

Do everything in your power to avoid that Mac. Not many games come out on Mac. Only get the Mac if she threatens to not marry you. :-)

I think Aaron is more likely to put a Linux/Unix Version out before a Mac or even BeOS copy.

Sorry.

It depends on the language and the porting tools involved... For example C (obscure example really) is designed to be easily ported between DOS, Unix, possibly Linux, and Mac (some work is needed I think)
I can't say for certain with Delphi... I've never used it before.

Given the way SEIV was systematically de-windowized versus SEIII (what right button?) I assumed that Aaron was developing on a Mac or Linux box and cross compiling onto the PC!

Not *****ing but I really don't understand why Aaron went with the home brew user interface versus the Windows flavour of SEIII.

Maybe: (i) he wanted to get away from the VisualBasic shareware look, (ii) he hoped to port to other platforms, (iii) maybe all the slick right click stuff crept into mature patches of SEIII.

Anyhow, I hope that as it matures the SEIV interface will become less mouse intensive.
(And no, I don't want to learn a set of Emacs style keyboard shortcuts.)

The current design was because Aaron wanted to attract more Users to the game. Many people just didn't get it with the right mouse clicks to get the menus.

We Beta Testers had a long argument on getting it back or getting rid of it.

Personally, I favor an option for it.

Is it now an article of faith that right-clicking is a no-no or can we hope to get context sensitive menus back in later patches?

Personally, I think that context sensitive menus are essential in SE for the same reason that they're essential for working effectively in Excel - the program is just too feature rich for the current interface.

I regard using the current SEIV interface as the "one step back" price I have to pay for the "two steps forward" in customizability.

Let's face it, Macs suck ***

My first computer was an Apple. I used Macs for years before I ever touched a PC.

But they still suck.

No reason why you couldn't emulate a PC on a mac - that kind of software has been around for years, and you should be able to find something. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if you could find freeware software to do the job. Run a few web searches and see what you can see.

Fortunately SE4 isn't particularly demanding and so would probably run fast enough under emulation on a high spec mac.
