I want maximum number of races in a game. What file controls this setting?

Re: Question on number of players
The max number of races you can have is 20 that is hardcoded into the game there is no file that controls that.
I personally would love to be able to play with more races cause there are so many great ones out there. It's a shame you can only use 20 at a time.

Re: Question on number of players
when you set the settings in beginning of game the computer picks the number of Ai players, very seldom will it max out the number of players, also I don't pick neutrals because they don't do much, I turn neutral off, but if you want all 20, then go to I believe its add empire and pick all the empires you want to play just remember that one has to be human controlled (you) you can also edit their racial traits this way, the only difference you would know which races start the game, only not where they are.

Re: Question on number of players
Thanks for the info. It would be nice to have a choice of number of races at start.
I like the max races(no neutrals) and not knowing who is out there.
It would also be nice if there was some kind of randomness to the races. Now you know if you encounter the Norak (sp) you had better recearch Point Defense.

i thought there was? well, if you use the 'use randomly generated races' button instead of selecting their .EMP file, i thought there was.

Re: Question on number of players
while we're on the topic, another question :
say you start out with 15 empires, and over the course of the games 5 rebellions took place. One of the empires is destroyed, can another one emerge through rebellion ?

Re: Question on number of players
Puke: not really. If you have 2000 racial credits available, the random (SE4 default here) will always be the same as the add-in ones. It doesn't determine what they research, just what racial areas they can take. In a 5000 point game they would add some traits, for example.

Re: Question on number of players
lemmy I think the new races are all neutral ones and so won't form a new major empire. If one of the major empires is destroyed then thats one less major but a new neutral empire can take over it's turn slot if it is created through rebellion or puppet political parties or something like that. I don't know what happens if you PPP someone and all 20 of the slots are filled. I assume that the PPP wouldn't work until a new slot opens up. I hope this somehow answered your question.

Re: Question on number of players
Puke is right, if you pick random, the computer picks your opponets according to what you selected, low, high, etc, however, rarely (at least I have never seen it, will it generate all 20)..BUT, What I have done, and found it works quite well, I pick add empire, I pick 10 or more of the races, give them addtional traits etc picking 5000 pts. and put them into the game. Then I also have computer generate additional random computer AI opponents. This way, yeh, you know who some of your opponents will be, but not ALL OF THE THEM as the computer picks the rest from those that you didn't pick. You could end up with 5-10 of the other races besides those you chose which would give you some surprises. you don't have to pick 10, just whatever number you want, the computer picks the rest..
I don't know if this works in any of the mods but it does it the original SE4
