Default Missile Teams indoors?

A thought,
firing a missile (say an ATM) from inside a building isn't so easy as it sounds. There must be ample space for the "gas plume" to expand normally without burning the crew! Not possible in a bedroom! Possible if firing from a warehouse, though. On the other hand when you have a Stinger section in a building it is logical to assume that it's located on the top. So probably the same assumption must be made for all missile firing inf units.
And this raises a more general question concerning infantry in buildings. Are the "searching/defense modifiers" based on the assumption that the unit is "in" the building?
Just curious!

There are no 'assumptions'.
Game usually sends me an email asking if I want a particular unit to be IN or ON TOP the building.
Makes for longer play, but we micromanagers have to live with it

If it doesnt work that way for you, I guess you got to update your email adress in preference screen LOL

50 yard/meters is a large area. One could certainly assume the squad is using the unseen "microterrain" around the building or its corners.

I've wondered the same question myself.

I have never been asked if I wanted the unit on top or in the building. Is that only in PBEM games?

Good question indeed. But as Bishop said, one hex of urban terrain is a large area, probably more than one building except for warehouses, so 1) occupying soldiers have penty of discrete outdoors hideouts if needed and 2) even if they aren't actually inside a building they won't be that easy to spot from a distance if they have dug in in some nondescript backyard or alley.

Slightly less to the point, most modern missiles are 'soft-launch' enough (i.e. low launch velocity and on-course booster engine) to allow being fired from inside large buildings (or even bedrooms for the lightest, most recent ones: Javelin, Eryx, MBT-LAW...) or roomy covert spaces between buildings which will be nearly as hard to spot.

On the other hand, most really old missiles don't have such a high velocity as such, and can rountinely be launched from a spot as far as 50m from the guy doing the guidance. So with one of these (AT-3, ENTAC, SS-11, Cobra, Vigilant, Bantam, you name them), you are literally able to fire the missile from the roof or the sidewalk while cosying inside the house or down in the basement!
That should mean something about firer being spotted, no?

RE. Bishop: whitout too much gratuitous assumption, I'd tend to consider that Czerpak was gently pulling your leg about the "Game usually send[ing him] an email asking if I want a particular unit to be IN or ON TOP the building". But I'll let him argue about his own declarations!
This being considered, that would be an interesting feature to have some position selector like on the helicopters, with, say, "outside/inside" or rather "street/storeys/top" positions, though that would mean a mind-boggling amount of micro-management.
Maybe only in a dedicated type of building hex standing for multi-storeys buildings. That would allow for interesting Grozny-like tactics, but would also call for some extensive coding in the spotting/targetting department.
Sheesh, I'm (yet again) going to make friends in the dev team by voicing such ideas!

50 yards is a large area - consider the buildings to be same as for 1/300 tabletop games, where you laid out a bit of grey felt as a "built up area" and scattered 1/300 model buildings on the felt as decoration, and moved them aside to make room for the model soldiers if needed.

(There is no option to put teams at different elevations in this game in a BUA either).

Cheers
Andy

Argue ?
Well, I cant see any point to argue about dreams...
Sorry Bishop, no bad intentions there. I always take games as they are - just games. When I have sniper in urban area I IMAGINE he is located on the roof, when there is rpg team - well, for me it lays low around the corner, if I need an infantry squad to make harsh defense I simply imagine it fights for each and every room in the building.
Works well for me, could as well for you and others.
Designers and betatesters must treat this game seriously (it is kind of their job, maybe not paid one, but still), we players should just take as much fun as we can from playing this beauty, developed for years by two - kind of insane - great guys.
Surely we all carry the way bit to far in our dreams every now and then, but who knows - we might, one day, see those dreams come true. Like, have you ever dreamed about getting those ancient classics in windows versions (with all the data - equpment, units etc) up to date ?
I did, and aparently it came true.
So now just go and enjoy .
Good gaming to all of you !
cheers
