Default Map making and finding maps

Happy Oktoberfest everyone! A bit late I know but never mind.

Now on to the business at hand. Does anyone remember where to find that magnificent map making tutorial and does anyone have a source for detailed maps of eastern Russia.

Google earth is ok but I can hardly ever scale down stuff from there (G-E) to my maps in the editor because I don't know how to get the coordinates or the distances displayed.

I am looking for ordnance survey type maps and topographical maps of: Yekaterinburg, the Urals, Magnitogorsk, Novo...(the one with Birsk in it) and any other Siberian towns etc of import. Also maps of northern Russia's coastline (same variety) would be really useful too. Maps of the Trans-Siberian railway (routes, places it passes etc) would be capital as well.

Any information on where to find any of these things would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Do you mean this?

Check links included therein about getting the maps you need (Microdem etc). Not easy but doable!

GE allows you to mark 2 points and draw a line between them (but no ability to place a grid on the map )

Suggest you draw a 1000M (or whatever grid square you are interested in) at the top corner of the GM image. Save the image with the reference line. Now, import to paintshop pro or whatever - and use the reference line as the basis of a grid using the drawing tools??

Cheers
Andy

How would I go about doing that with the computer? Any special programmes?

"Do you mean this?"

No but it is a start, thanks.

Use the Google Maps facility to draw a measured line between 2 points. Ensure that line is at the top right of the map, so it is there in the saved image. (I am assuming the saved google map image will retain the points and line!). Once the image (with the reference line) is in paintshop, you can use it to scale lines you draw using paintshops normal drawing tools with.

Cheers
Andy

Alright, really dumb question, how do you get the maps in WINSPMBT?

You still need to build them manually in the editor. What this tool does is allow you to create an image to work from as you "paint" the SP map from it.
