Default Whose black candle is this?

I thought it was impossible, by design, to tell whose dominion extended over a given province. That is, it's either a white candle or a black candle and that's all you know. However, I recently came across a pre-release Dom3 screen shot that seems to indicate it was once possible to tell. http://shrapnelgames.com/Illwinter/D...s/com_zoom.jpg Did this change at some point, or am I missing out on a command or technique?

hold your pointer over the candles in the upper left hand corner box (when a province is selected)

i think black comes up as "an enemies dominion"

White candle == your dominion == you can identify it.

Where do you see a black candle?

Obake Boy is looking at land under his own dominion. In the upper right of the image, it shows it is Obake Boy playing.

That's too bad. I was thinking there wasn't any point in identifying the dominion owner by name (instead of just "Your dominion") if you weren't going to identify all the dominion. It would be neat to have a religious map of the world, so to speak, as well as the political map of who owns which provinces. From the role-playing perspective, it's nice to know whether your fiendish Caliphate empire is lording it over a bunch of peace-loving Stoics, manly Celtic druid-types, or bloodthirsty Aztecs, in addition to knowing when they are won over to your blood-cult. From the game perspective it doesn't matter, of course, but role-playing wise it would be nice.

I tried to generate such a map for large long-running games but it didnt work out very well. The people in the mod/map subforum are gettng closer to creating all of the tools for that but its not available yet.

How is that possible if you can't figure out who "owns" a black candle? Do you mean by hacking the ftherlnd file, or is there an in-game way?

Well the steps would be
A) create a map that has the boundaries but none of the artwork
B) find an x/y location for each province so that color can be targeted there with a fill command
C) find out who owns which provinces
D) create a jpg for viewing online

(A) is possible in two ways. Using one of the new random generators in the mod/map forum which allows you to reuse the same seed with different color settings. Or using ImageMagick tools to create a mask of a Dom3 generated map.

(B) either using one of the new tools which actually records the white-point positions. Or use imagemagick to do it which would be pretty hard.

(C) have the game process with many -d switches giving you as much debug data as possible. Then digging thru that log file for references to wars and such telling you who won the fight and where. Not the best way in the world I grant but possible.

(D) ImageMagick again to put it all together doing pattern or color fills, on the white-point position, of the province, for each combat recorded from the log file.. then outputting it as a jpg

Nothing is impossible. Its a computer. Impossible is just a short way of saying "I could get it to work but it wouldnt be worth all the time and effort it would take."
