Unique tech areas??
I am real new to this game and am just starting to sort of learn how to play. I am not real familiar with the whole MOD thing but I did download "the Ultimate Mod" from Spaceempires.org. Among certain technology trees that seem to be lacking - and I understand from some other Posts I have read that this MOD is incomplete and may be patched to add-in the "missing" techs - I have noticed when I land on a planet where I have "detected advanced" technology, I never get anything.
Having looked through some of the data .txt files, and not understanding a lot of it, I see there are 12 unique tech areas available in the ultimate mod. But I never get them when I colonize a planet. Am I missing something??
Sorry if it's a newb question. I haven't been playing the game very long.

Re: Unique tech areas??
There are 3 types of technologies, racial techs, unique ruins techs, and normal techs. To get racial techs, you have to take the required racial ability at the start of the game. Unique ruins techs can only be discovered by colonizing a ruins planet.
Ruins planets can actually have 2 different types of technology on them. Some ruins will have a unique tech. Other ruins will give you from 1 to 3 normal, researchable technologies. For example, you could get Space Yards I. If you colonize a normal ruins planet, you might have already researched the technology that the planet would have given you. This results in you receiving no technology from colonizing the ruins planet.

Re: Unique tech areas??
Thank you but I think that part I understood. I am currently using the Ultimate Mod, and it's the Unique tech areas that I was talking about. I haven't received any from colonizing a "unique ruins planet." I was just wondering if anyone that has used the UM has noticed whether the unique tech areas were working or not....
Thanks....

Re: Unique tech areas??
Other mods that you should consider download are the TDM Mod pack and the Zippy Mod. There are others as well, but these are two of the best.

Re: Unique tech areas??
There is an increased chance of finding unique ruins techs in the Ultimate Mod, because there are more of them. What message do you get when you colonize these ruins planets? If it is "We have detected advanced technology present on this planet" then you should be getting a unique tech. If it is a different message, then you colonized a planet with a standard tech level on it. There appears to be no problems with the unique techs and components in the data files, so I don't know what else could be causing you to not receive them.

Re: Unique tech areas??
Yeah, thanks for the responses guys but I guess it's just one of those things. Maybe I'll have to try reinstalling. The message on the surface planet is "We have detected advanced technology present on this planet" but I am still not receiving any of the technologies. I don't get them from the other ones as well so I was wondering I guess if there was a setting in the game setup that turned them on or off. I guess I'll just play without them. You don't have to get them to win a game, do you?

Re: Unique tech areas??
There is an option to eliminate all ruins planets at game startup, but there isn't one that will allow ruins to be seeded without any techs in them.

Re: Unique tech areas??
You wouldn't happen to be playing on a map that was saved in the Map Editor, would you?
There's a bug in 1.49 where the game doesn't recognize Ruins in edited maps. You see the advanced tech message when you click on the uncolonized planet, but the planet isn't listed as Special under (F4) Planets, and doesn't give anything when you colonize it.
