As soon as you play against humans, you will quickly find that there is no ultimate weapon.

Some weapons to look into:
APBs:
- Excellent range (7)
- Max-Tech: 2.1 DamageFactor at point blank, fading to 1.5 at max range
- Requires physics 1, then energy stream weapons

Wave-Motion Gun:
- Best Range (8)
- Big initial punch, but long reload time.
- Poor Damage (0.67) amortized over the reload time.
- +30% accuracy bonus
- Requires propulsion 7?, then high energy discharge level 8.

Phased Polaron Beam:
- Good range (6)
- Excellent Damage (2.0) at point blank, (1.67) at range 6
- Skips normal shields (!)
- Requires Physics 2, then phased energy weapons.

Null Space Projector:
- Moderate Range (5)
- Poor damage (0.4) (reload time of 3)
- Completely ignores all shields and armor (!)
- Requires Astrophysics 2, then null space weapons.

Time Distortion Burst:
- Excellent Range (7)
- Extreme damage vs Shields (4.0), moderate vs physical (1.0)
- Requires Temporal Racial Trait, then Temporal Studies 2, then Temporal Weapons.

EDIT: Data fixes

Is there a techtree available somewhere? I am thinking along the lines of a list or chart of tech advances and their required research areas. I would like to be able to plan my research out for certain goals .

I just received my copy of SE4 Gold, and for my first game I am playing a race of research gurus just so I can see what tech there is and how it interacts. But a techtree printout would be an invaluable reference guide.

Texfire,
I loved the Tech Chart in Civ II.
Still I have found exploring the tech trees and making notes adds to the challenge, (and to me the fun). I read of a tech and a coresponding strategy here and try to determine how to reach it. Yes, sometimes I break down and ask "how do I". SJ usualy bails me out.
Mostly I play "realisticaly" like any civilazation and learn as I go while extrapulating the possibles based on the hints I see here.
BTW: I love the Inks Lake Region near Auston.

"- Moderate damage (1.2)"

Uh, how exactly did the Null-Space end up with a higher damage rating than the WMG? You factoring damage type in?

Austin is a very nice city. McKinny (spelling?) falls is my favorite place.
Go Longhorns ! You never walk alone ! ( oops, wrong game )

I didn't see anyone mention this, but you can enable the "view complete tech tree" option in setup (the game mechanics section I think).

While in the game there is a button to see the tech tree in the bottom right of the research queue. This lets you see it from two perspectives, both to see which tech areas unlock other tech areas and to see what is available at each tech level.

While it doesn't provide any stats it does give you a good idea of what you can get.

As far as what the 'best' weapon is, it really depends on what you like. I am currently quite fond of the humble meson bLaster. It has a good range (6 I think), good damage (35 at maw IIRC) that doesn't drop with range, and is as light as a feather (well, a 20kt feather anyway). I enjoy having fast meson equipped ships set to max weapons range (prefeably with some sensors or a religious talisman). It seems to work quite well.

Of course, this can always change. I next plan to break in null-space weapons and see how I like them.

Also, don't get too caught up in relying on damage factors and such as an accurate measure of a weapons worth. Each weapon has its own personality that takes some getting used to, and simple changes in support components, ship strategies (important), and even the order that the weapons are placed in can turn that useless P.O.S. that you just wasted two years researching into the Fist of God that you hoped it would be.

Phased Polaron Beam:
- Good range (6)
- Excellent Damage (2.0) at point blank, (1.67) at range 6
- Requires Physics 2, then phased energy weapons.
-------------------

ALSO PENETRATES NORMAL SHIELDS!!!

A very helpful feature right through Mid Game. Good range and firepower too. Useful even against some larger empires that have phased shields. The nuetrals and little have-nots will get ripped to shreads.

I've been exploring and it seems the Temporal Racial traits have some really mean high end weapons.

BTW: I miss Austin Aquafest and other concerts Town Lake (Zilker) park.

This is the tree I had posted before.
I still have to update it and add the Drones tech tree that AFAIK is the only new tech.
