What is causing This?
Since I got a 64mb Nvidia Geforce MX4000 video card both WinSpmbt and WinSpww2 have run acceptably. Recently I notice that after a fresh boot, they both run fine. But if I quit out, and try to play them again, they run so slow they are unplayable. My system specs. Duron 1200, 512 MB Ram, Windows 98SE, 80gig HD. The only programs other than the OS running in the background when I play are the Virus protection and firewall.
Is the problem hardware or software. What do you recommend?
Dankie te alle.

Re: What is causing This?
First you need to clarify a few things.
You say : "Since I got a 64mb Nvidia Geforce MX4000 video card " ...
then..
"Recently I notice "
So did you get the MX4000 recently or not ? If the MX4000 is not recent but the problem is then you need to think back to exactly when the problem started and let us know what else you may have done around the time you noticed the slowdown when you restarted the games. Did this change co-incide at all with the new patch for instance.

Re: What is causing This?
Don,
I goth the Mx4000 in December 2005 IIRC. I have the latest drivers for it. I have noticed freezing up problems while using the net, and think something may be slowly dying. The problem has been going on for about a month. The solution, I conceive, is to replace the system. Any suggestions.
And many thanks for your interest.

Re: What is causing This?
I would suspect a hardware problem as well.

Which antivirus and firewall are you using ?
Some antivirus and firewall are very heavy on ressource and nowadays absolutely not optimised for older computer. I learned this the hard way when i was a norton internet security user (that had both norton antivirus and norton firewall in the suite).
One of my system is running under window98 too, but the day i entirely removed the norton suite so no trace was present anymore on my system and on the advice of a frien i installed Zone Alarm version 4.5.594 (the best version for the OS window 98) and NOD32, i immediately noticed that my computer became more stable and responsive than it was when i was under the norton antivirus+firewall suite.
I can't say for other antivirus and firewall, but under window 98 if you are running norton products "up to date", it may play a very big part on your problems as while it worked nice years ago, the way the norton programs are working now is not old computer friendly anymore.

Re: What is causing This?
My firewall is ZoneAlarm 6.1.744.001
I use AVG virus protection, because it's free, and it can be automated to carry out daily scans and update checks without my interference. I have my external CD burner on ONLY when I expect to use it, and my external hard drive is usually unlugged as well. I'm playing the download version of WinSPMBT with all the official patches.
I don't use Norton any more. They improved it until they broke it.

Re: What is causing This?
Apparently it's a problem with the video card not being 100,000 percentum compatible with something in my system. I have discovered if I play 800x600 in windowed mode, toggle the delays down it works well enough. Because of a problem that the computer has freezing up while online, with two or more windows open, I'm still looking to get a new system.
Dankie te alle.
