Default Blitz hosting help

I have my network IP and net IP, but neither works for hosting. Is this a firewall thing or do I have to change something on my router, or or or or or . . ?

I searched forum, didn't find this topic, so I apologize if this has been covered. thanks

I was curious as well, about port selection. I had been assuming that under Windows, after you designated the server, the security manager would pop up saying Dom3 wanted to access port XXXX, and ask if I wanted to allow it. But assuming is bad, especially when you see someone else having a hosting issue.

Yah, window asked me if I wanted to allow Dominions to access blah blah blah and whatnot, and I said yes . . . I'm on a LAN, though, and when I host, it gives me my LAN IP. I look up my IP on whatsmyip, but that doesn't work.

I'm not very tech savvy

Hmmmm, I used to used the ipconfig command to show my current address, but now when I do so, the DOS shell closes instantly. After trying a few times, I could see some text flash by, as if it were actually performing the task, but it just closes in a flash, so it's impossible to read at all.

I'd also love to know a way that works.

Okay, that's what I was missing. Haven't had to do this in some time.

Start > Run > cmd > ipconfig

That is to say off the start menu, hit Run, and enter 'cmd' to request a command line, then it will open up the DOS shell, at which point you run ipconfig. That will give you the IP that SHOULD work.

If you are in local net, than you need to redirect incoming connections from your proxy to your PC (with "do not translate address" option ON) and give other players your external (real) IP.
If you your PC has direct access to Internet than do as JimMorrison says.

Short Answer:
Another way to do it is to ask the internet.
There are many sites but the simplest is probably
http://WhatIsMyIP.org/

Longer Answer:
Many people have LANs now. Local Area Networks. Their computer talks to their router, their iPod, their laptop, their Xbox, etc. People tend to confuse the addresses used "in house" that the different toys use to talk to each other, with those that the internet sees as the address for the entire house. Using an internal LAN IP number is like yelling at people on the net "Im in the bedroom!". They need the house address.

If you visit a site such as I posted then it is telling you the address it sees you as coming from. The address that the net sees your entire LAN. That is the address that people out on the net will have to use to get to your machine.
