Default Speaking of mines

I was curious about the prospects of having mines being ionic like ionic missles. These would be great, all those nasty fleets trying to break into the back door. Ah yes, cripple them so that they can't leave, and then send in the guard dogs to pick them off, or capture for that matter.

Could this work?

With current Versions of SE IV, no. The mines will keep 'attacking' even when the ship(s) don't have any engines left. So you'll waste a huge amount of mines on a single scout or something stupid like that.

In the forthcoming patch, whenever that's ready, mines are finally smart enough not to attack a ship that doesn't contain any components of their 'special' damage-type if they have a 'special' damage-type. Then it will be a workable strategy.

This will be great for the mod I'm currently working on. I don't like the way mines work. I think they are too powerful. So, I've made it so that all mines only have cloak lv 1 and you have to put specially designed cloaks for the different types on them. That way, you can have strong mines that are easier to detect (and avoid) or weaker mines that are not detectable. To make this work, however, I've had to create new cloaks for each type of sensor. In the end it will work out that just because you have HyperOptics 3 doesn't mean you'll see all the cloaked ships. Just the ones with passive EM cloaking. I think this will work well because now, a cloaking device (which is expensive to research) dosen't automaticly become obsolete once everyone has lv 3 sensors. It might not work on one enemy but will on another until everyone has research lv 3 in all sensors.

Plus, this takes advantage of the fact that there are several forms of sensors and cloaks. An aspect that I think was underdeveloped.

Gee, that turned out longer winded than I anticipated....
