Yeah this makes me especially sad as I've had horrible luck at expanding and the Dwarves are already on me..

I don't think they actually used the mercs to expand, though I could be wrong. I think they were spotted just after they were hired.

Do what? I only gathered my few scattered troops into a single army and threw them on my capital; I fear that any semblance of strategy was purely coincidental
