Vision greater then 40; what does it really mean in game terms?
I understand that ground vehicles with vision rated higher then forty are assumed to have some sort of ground surveilance radar or similar equipment. But in game terms, I haven't yet noticed exactly what this means. And as expensive as those vehicles can be, I haven't had a lot of oppurtunity to test it out.
Also, there are a handful of vehicles listed as vision '45' in yellow (instead of the green usually used for GSR). Does this mean an improved thermal sight of some sort?

40 vision can see 40 hexes, 45 can see 45 hexes and 50 can see 50 hexes. If you have 50 vision and your opponent has 40 you have a 25 % sighting advantage over him and that can make all the difference if it's used under the right conditions. If you are fighting in a city or a jungle in broad daylight it's a waste of points

There is also a matter of improved vision through smoke and some terrain (trees). I think you need 40 to see through smoke and for the other, it depends but I don't know exactly how.
Not sure if it also smoke cuts on the distance 8 vision due to the weather, 40 vision for the system due to thermal imaging, smoke at 7 or 10 distance, final view distance still 40? Funny I haven't checked it yet lol.

seeing through smoke is one of the greatest benefits, but in low vis. battles, whoever has the better imaging equipment should win, just try fighting poor armies with, say, USMC at less than 10 hexes visible, you can hit them while they can't even see you, i also think that a greater vision rating makes your ability to find concealed enemies better.

Re: Vision greater then 40; what does it really mean in game terms?
I appreciate the input so far guys. What I'm really wondering is the actual difference between say, vision 40 (ha! I see through your smoke!), vision 45 (example: USA M7 Fist-V), and then the GSR (supposedly) ratings of 50 (example: USA M577a2 AOP GSR)

My guess and nothing more is that the only difference between them is the distance they can see. There might be a bonus for calling in artillery but I don't know.

I told you the "actual difference" in post 2 but you seem to have chosen to belive there should be other differences besides what I told you and that a unit with 45 vision will cost 10 points more than the same unit with 40 vision and 50 vision will cost 10 more points than 45

The diffrence as said is range under the right conditions this is great esp for arty directors, eyes on target & safe. Also invaluable for the sides that have em are 50 vis scout vehicles so you can see him coming & act accordingly, right conditions they are definetly worth the points.
