Re: Trading
One thing I've been doing is, find an enemy with different colonizing tech and then I colonize a planet near them and offer to trade the planet for their colonizing tech. They usually go for it but only after I've built something on the planet.
Its seems to be a good way for me to get alot of planets early on without having to wait for enough research points to research Gas or Ice tech.

Re: Trading
I have posted this somewhere else, but it is the same underlying idea as Facetious has w/o the cost/time of colonizing & trading for the tech.
Start w/a semi rare colonization tech (ice or my favorite Gas Giant), colonize like mad till you run into another race (seems that rock is the most popular), and immediatly offer a trade treaty. If they accept, then immediately ask for their colonize tech as a gift on nuetral(if it's one you need - duh) and they will give it to ya - I've done this in approx 8 straight games and have never had a race deny the request after they accept the trade treay - even the xenophobs.
it seems to be effective and allows a huge early advantage in colonization

Re: Trading
Somebody mentioned that you can trade 2 escorts for any 1 ship of light cruiser or smaller size, and 3 escorts for any 1 ship of any size and the AI will always accept.

wow, i have to test that. what a great way to deter an attacking fleet, have some of these escorts! you sure they dont base it around the construction cost of the ship at all? an empty escort is as good as a fully loaded one? are trade paramaters programmed into the AI scripts? I know they trade resources 1:1.

Re: Trading
I don't know for sure, I haven't tried it. I tend to ignore the AI and just do my own thing. If they're in a system I want, I attack regardless of our treaty status. If they offer a trade or treaty, I accept regardless of the terms. If they offer a demand, I reject it regardless of the terms. I'm just forwarding what I found elsewhere. As I recall he said that he liked to trade weaponless escorts that had run out of supplies while scouting.

Re: Trading
As a rule, I tend not to trade with the AI. It makes the game too easy. The AI doesn't understand the values of a trade and will not realize when it has been taken advantage of (like in trading ships without supplies). I will trade resources with a AI that has a higher level treaty with me, but always offer 3x - 4x what I ask for. And will always try to trade with an AI that needs the other resource (rads to a time manip).
I wonder if those that take advantage of the AI through trading are also the ones that compplain that the AI is such a poor challenge?

Re: Trading
Well, I don't take advantage of it via trading, I don't use mines, I rarely do the missile dance, I fight strategic combat as often as not, and I still find it too easy.
