The UK and Commonwealth doctrine for infantry was to use fire and manoeuvre to close with and kill the infantry with bomb and bayonet after winning the fire-fight. (If the enemy decided not to stick around for the CQB phase, that was fine as well.)
The "winning the fire-fight" part was a rather important element to this of course!.
