No tanks were used by the South Africans. Eland 60 and 90 armoured cars, mechanised infantry and medium artillery, but no tanks.

I've used this Web site before, " 61 Mech Battalion Group Veterans Association," if you have not visited the site, please do as they are socked with information on the period you're concerned. At the bottom of the page there is a link to Operation Protea. You can safely say 61 Mech did not use tanks during Operation Protea. 2 SSB, Special Services Battalion units drove armored cars.
Looking forward to your scenario!
Have fun.

From reports at Airlines.net, from aircraft crash data, from airline schedules as early as 1991, and from the fact that the Soviets flew in supplies, I would say this airport was paved in 1981.
From other accounts of the battle you could include a platoon of Ratels, mech infantry from 61 Mech as they supported the SAI at the airport.
A minor point, but there were Soviet advisors at the battle supporting SWAPO/FAPLA forces.
Looking forward to your scenario.
