Ship design question -- #2
I recently got into a dust-up with the Amonkrie. They had light-cruisers equipped with Anti-matter Torps IV and 3 shield III's. I had cruisers with heavy mount Nulls III and armor III and Aegis Cruisers with CM III.
They kicked my bootie!
I read some bubbameitza about armor III being pretty good and Null weps ditto. Du'oh! I think I got a wrong number.

Re: Ship design question -- #2
Null-space weapons are only really useful against opponents with really heavy defenses on their ships. They do not make a very good primary weapon.
Armor is good in PBW games, because most players research PPBs fairly early. But if your enemies don't use PPBs, shields are much better.

What do you reccomend as a good primary weapon?
What do you think of the Anti-Proton DF wep at higher levels?

What do you think of the Anti-Proton DF wep at higher levels? Phased Polaron Beams of course. No need to research anything else for almost whole game !

Something else to remember: Amonkrie have at least a defensive bonus (2000-point game, 10% defense; 3000 or 5000-point game, 20% defense AND 20% offense). So that would make a difference.

Elowan, use DUCs until you can get PPBs. Once you can safely afford to research APB XIIs, switch to them (and make sure to have Shield Depleter Vs too, and not Shield Disruptors, which have shorter range). Do not use any level lower than I think XI, which is the first to be better than the PPB V. Do not rely on racial weapons as a primary weapon. Most of them are quite useless.

Re: Ship design question -- #2
Fyron - you must be a born teacher! Nice response.
DirectorTsaarx: I feel a little better now that I know that.
I appreciate the other answers as well - got the fog out of my brain.
I have been researching DUC -> 5 and PDC as well; missiles to CM IV; ships to LC. After that I concentrated on infrastructure and then went back to weps advances.
I've tried researching Adv Res 2 at the first of the game - but frankly - that doesn't make much difference until and unless you've a large population/planet base. I can use the extra 10th years(s) to bulk up my nasties until I've spread out some.
