Pretty much, Prisons of Fire has double the range so it's a lot easier to use, but false fetters will likely immobilize for a longer period/snare more mammoths.

Also, considering clockwork horrors against them, on the idea that swarms of the little devils could kill the elephants before they start stamping me. But, they're small and have low HP, so I'm guessing they'd be flattened like tin cans if I don't time it just right....

Very risky and expensive; Each mammoth can kill something like 3/4 squares of clockworks per turn if it goes tits-up.
As Ghoul31 point out, they have abysmal magic resistance, so paralyze, false fetters, etc.
They're pretty bleh on the not-tramping front, so a size-6 blocker could work out well (Crushers come to mind, if you're mentioning clockwork horrors).
Ethereal helps against trampling as well, so something like a Black Servant with some blacksteel items would work as a decent blocker (Judging by how well Shuras worked out as a counter to tramplers in a game I played in).
Rat-tail whips are valid as well if you have N access, drop one or two onto your thug of choice (likely a bane), and you can stop a nice chunk of mammoths with it (Combination of animal awe + fear attack).
That's assuming you have a method of killing them however after blocking them.
