Whats the point in take cover. Shouldnt infantry always take cover automatically.

Only campaign play and opfire in mbt sounds interesting atm.

I happen to like the army building phase. Building an army and thinking what ur opponent might choose. Tinkering strategies and see how they turn out.

From the GG:

"Non-vehicle units with 2 or more MP remaining can now voluntarily take cover to break enemy line of sight at a cost of 2MP by pressing the ‘ C ‘ key. Taking cover especially if close to the enemy is not a guarantee that they will break LOS."

You will when your infantry units start getting whacked by MG's or AFV's.

Dont like the idea. How can a unit take more cover if its already in the cover or if there is no cover to be had ?

Does that feature put the unit using it unable to shoot that turn exposing it to enemy when it shoots ?

Has it to be done before the unit shoots or can it be done after the unit shoots ?

I have a feeling that feature could make the game worse and it seems irrational. Maybe that is a feature some players might want to rule out as a house rule.

Don't think it needs to be a house rule, it's not that big of a deal and it makes realistic sense. All crunchies are trained to take cover in the real world.

From the manual:

Quote:
Non-vehicle units with 2 or more MP remaining can now voluntarily take cover to break enemy line of sight at a cost of 2MP by pressing the ‘ C ‘ key. Taking cover especially if close to the enemy is not a guarantee that they will break LOS.

In no way does this small feature make the game 'worse' in fact it makes it more realistic and can help save your infantry if they are getting ripped to sherds in the open.

That combined with popping smoke (inf).

That's funny - we were trained to keep upright till the section commander issued the command "Take Cover!" - only then would you do the "dash, down, find cover, observe, return fire" battle drill initiated by the "Take Cover" command issued by him. Taking cover wasn't up to individual soldiers to do on their own initiative (though in reality of course if fire came a wee bit close, he was going to do something about it!)

The troops may be in terrain cover, but the action of taking cover is entirely separate to their being in say woodland terrain.

Infantry in the game already can take cover (an active action) as a result of taking fire - you will see the "X takes cover" message, and if successful they may break LOS, as well as breaking the chain of fire.

The take cover command is there as a voluntary action in case (or if you are certain) that you have been spotted, the unit then attempts to take cover (or if already down, wiggles to a new fire position, hopefully not spotted).

It has nothing to do with being in cover terrain whatsoever (although it will be easier to go into cover if in covering terrain). And there is no such thing as "no cover to be had" - flat terrain will have lumps and bumps, individual bushes or rocks etc that provide cover. Flat terrain is not a lawnmowered golf course - think of it more as the rough (as found in a Scottish Golf course, not one of those manicured golf courses).

In the US I am not sure what the crunchies were exactly taught, we were giving basic commands as move and fire. I was a M1A1 tank driver, and only needed to know the 'basics' of infantryman training. We certainly hit the deck as grunts when we were not in our tanks lol.

I have imagined my steel panther infantry to always approach in cover when enemy precence is known. Sometines those scout teams movin 4mph can pass through enemy lines unnoticed because of that.

Have been imagining that when an infantry is being shot as a suprise it takes cover, maybe there is sergeant yelling "incoming!" or something.
