Replay not showing casulaties
Hello, all
Replays in PBEM seem different from those in local games against the AI in that the former do not show casualties and kills. That is, I see only fire exchange during the replay, but after it, while making a move, find some of my units damaged or killed. Is it the intended behavior?

Re: Replay not showing casulaties
I think it might be because of tyhe opposing players options as vs ai it takes to account only your options.
You should probably ask the opposing player about tyhe options and are they similar to yours.
I do not know, im just guessing as i know those will affect the replay.

Re: Replay not showing casulaties
Never had that issue to my knowledge only issue is both players must have same artillery setting otherwise arty may not show.
Both fast artillery on or off.

I have asked him, but I think we both have it on, because I do see the action of his artillery at the end of my turn.
What I saw during the last turn was this: two of his AFVs fired at my sniper, but no message came that it was destroyed. When, however, the focus switched to another fire exchange nearby, the sniper was no longer there, as if the AFV's had actually killed him but the game hadn't told me.

Re: Replay not showing casulaties
Not all of the messages get played in replays. PBEM replay may differ from own-game replays as well. Replay has always been an oddity of the SP system, and I have never really investigated the obtuse code that is involved in it.
At least the game does have a replay function - it was added as a bolt-on update to SP1 way back in 98 or so, after the game had been out a year or 2 anyways. I think that was also what required an upgrade in the RAM to the full 4MB that MSDOS could handle.
Prior to that, SP1 had no replay whatsoever - you just opened up your game after a PBEM turn and stuff had blown up. A convention arose for PBEM players to sent a narrative description to their opponents when doing PBEM.

Re: Replay not showing casulaties
If you ever try to alter how the replay works, i suggest that the animation level preference would also affect replays.

It would be great if you could generalise and reuse the implementation of replay used in local games against the AI, because it works well. Not sure, however, how difficult a task it is...

Then the current replay is already a huge improvement. That convention of verbal summary in no good because the other player may not know how much information to disclose, which of his units were visible to the enemy during his turn, &c.

Re: Replay not showing casulaties
Animation preference setting differences between to players *could* be an issue but I seem to recall that most preferences are taken as the P1 player when the PBEM is set up....all but fast arty and we have not locked that out for PBEM because some players may not want to have to watch every fall of shot but just accept that what is left on map after a bombardment is the result and move on.
That said it's been years since I last investigated that issue

Fast arty off both players acts normally both players see shells fall.
If either player has fast arty on both players are treated as having i it on.
Air strikes occasionally do not show up so if they caused the casualties.
Think this only happens if either player has fast arty on or occasionally on player 1s first turn.
