... ship editor(s) and converters that convert the .mod files from games to editable meshes or the existance of editors that can work with these ship files.

For example: has anyone been able to get a LightWave (lwo) file out of SCMEv0.7 that can be loaded into LW? Is there some other application?

I have LW7 and I get an error with mod files converted to lwo with this app which ever output I choose whenever I try loading them into LW.

I don't know much about this kinda stuff but the write-up leads one to think that the following MAY be what you are after. Won't hurt to check it out anyways.

Polytrans 3D file conVersion, viewing and optimization system 2.2.

I found it at http://downloads.com.com under multimedia. I searched using "lightwave" as a keyword.
