Computer Experience vs Crew
Do ships with computers gain experience at the same rate as a crew?

Re: Computer Experience vs Crew
I don't know about same rate, but their experience does increase.
I use them in larger ships since the AI doesn't use computer viruses (later in game) and therefore I caan save a bit if tonnage/space.

Re: Computer Experience vs Crew
I pretty much use computers as soon as possible. The hazards of being an AI myself.

Re: Computer Experience vs Crew
The first time I played the demo I used master computers alot. Until I made a ceck on the cost of a master computer compared to all components needed on a normal starship.
That's, early game, alot of money. Can't remember the exact figures but I think that it's a defferens in both maintance cost and construction of atleast 500 of each material.

Re: Computer Experience vs Crew
True. However, I am trying to play my race as a bunch sentient computers.

Re: Computer Experience vs Crew
Well by the time I research the larger ship sizes I can afford the cost of the master computers and the space savings is very worth it on ships that need 5 or more components (bridge, 2 crew, 2 life support) or more. If I can squeeze in a couple more weapons or point defence sometimes it can dramatically help the effectiveness of the ship.

Re: Computer Experience vs Crew
One important thing to note about the increased cost of a master computer is that construction rates calculate each resource separately. Like a Ship Space Yard 1 can build with 1000 mineral, 1000 organics, and 1000 energy at once. That means that most often the organic and energy build abilities are wasted. The master computer doesn't take much more minerals, so it gets built in about the same time as the crew facilities. In big ships its actually cheaper in minerals and thus gets built way faster.
