Default Short weapons range Strategy?????

Does anyone use Short weapons range strategy?
If so,what exactly for? Is it the best strategy for a certain design you use or weapon. When would it be better than optimal or point blank strategies?

I never use it but its use would be if you have a weapon that does more damage at close range and your ships can take the punishment to get close to do that damage. Of course if the enemies ships also do more damage close up the advantage would be negated. I don't think its as popular as the other strategies but it could work in some circumstances. For example if you design ships with a large amount of Organic armor or Crystaline armor with shields. The problem with that is the weapons you get from those traits don't all decrease damage with range so the other part of the equasion is gone.

If your ships do better at close range and you can take the damage wouldn't point blank be better? And wouldn't optimal know that and fire at short range like short range strategy would?
