Requesting advice for returning to SEIV.

I have been away from SEIV for a long time and I now want to become absorbed again. I currently have v. 1.60 Gold and I see that we are up to v. 1.84. Is my best route to re-install the game, upgrade with the patch and then install empires and mods? I don't think I have any mods that can't be loaded again plus the ones I have are probably out of date.

Since MOO3 looks like a bust from the Boards (too bad

because I loved MOO1 and MOO2), I figure I should conquer the galaxy in SEIV. Any advice is appreciated.
