Except by dying and making sure you have no other commanders in the same province, or that they have all the slots the cursed item could go into already filled.

perhaps when your enemy has a nonimmortal sc pretender could you send a scout to battle with him with 2 eyes of aiming ?
the pretender should find them and be BLIND hehe .
then he has to chose whether staying blind or losing 1 in all his paths
if you are already winning this could be great for humiliating your opponents
