I just realized that if the bids are kept secret and the seller gives the item to the highest bidder, the system I proposed works as the mercenary recruiting scheme. D'oh, there goes the originality. *g* Of course there are all the possibilities of favoring certain candidates over others when everything's secret, but these (imagined) slights are probably best resolved in the game thread.
