I click on a empty system and like magic it is over.

That doesn't work with the show log of all ships button. What it does is systematically go through every ship you own and show its movement log. I have tried getting out of it, but the only things possible are waiting it out and ctrl + alt + del.

And in regards to your edit, yeah, you are wrong about the show for all ships button. It is indeed evil incarnate.
