I run at 1600x1200 myself so I'd like to see better high-res support also.
But you don't need to lower your resolution - I play the game at 1600x1200 and it works OK. The main window is smaller than I'd like (black border around it), but some of the other windows, like the planet, fleet, colony and construction lists stretch top to bottom on the screen, showing more planets, etc than you'd see at 1024 res.
At 1280, things would be a little smaller than the 1024 mode, but the lists would be a little bigger - I'd recommend giving it a try.
