Default The Ampliture

Has anybody read a series from Alan Dean Foster a while back that that revolved around a struggle invloving the Ampliture vs. the Weave? For those that haven't, the Weave was a coalition of Free Races while the ampliture where a race of telepaths.

The Ampliture sought to use their abilities of telepathy and mind control to bring the entire universe into their unitarian philosiphy. Since they were the only telepaths known, they thought they were uniquely placed to judge every other race's value and devise a scheme under which all races could live.

Of course the member races of the Weave thought that was all a load communistic dog crap and they fought a major war that Lasted until they met the humans (I won't give away anymore of the actual story).

Anyway, I thought this might be a good basis for someone trying to develop the background for a telepathic race. Personally, I think the overt use of telepathy, like for weapons, is a bit tacky. That's why I usually play w/out the tech even allowed. I would be much more interested if a telepathic tech tree could be worked that really capitalized on melding other races together. Kind of like a parasite race that really needs subject races to really prosper.
